uPVC or Aluminium Gutters?
uPVC costs €25 to €40 a metre fitted and lasts 25 to 40 years; aluminium costs €55 to €90 a metre, is formed in long runs with almost no joints, and lasts longer. For most Dublin semis uPVC is the sensible buy; aluminium pays off on long runs, modern houses and anywhere you never want to think about them again.

When uPVC is the right call
- A terrace or a semi, where the runs are short anyway.
- Matching the neighbour's gutter on a shared roof.
- A tight budget, or a house you'll sell in a few years.
When aluminium is worth it
- Long runs on a bungalow or a detached house, where plastic would have many joints.
- A modern house with anthracite windows, where the colour should match.
- You want the gutters to outlast the roof covering.

Questions people ask
Are aluminium gutters noisy in the rain?
A little more than plastic on a thin profile. Most people don't notice from inside.
Does aluminium rust?
No. It's powder coated, and aluminium doesn't rust. Scratches can mark the coating.
Can aluminium gutters go on the old fascia?
If the fascia is sound. Rotten timber is replaced first, whatever the gutter.
Which adds more to the house?
Neither adds much value on a survey. What matters to a buyer is that they don't leak.
