Replacing Cast Iron Gutters in Dublin
On a Victorian or Georgian Dublin house, cast iron gutters are replaced like for like in new cast iron, €90 to €160 a metre fitted, or €2,500 to €7,500 for a run with scaffolding. If the house is a protected structure or in an architectural conservation area, swapping to plastic can need planning permission, so ask the council first.

Restore or replace
Most cast iron can be restored: the joints cleaned and resealed, cracked lengths replaced in new iron, and the whole run painted. Replacement makes sense when most lengths are cracked or rusted through. Small cast iron repairs are on our sister site, gutter repair Dublin.
Protected structures and conservation areas
31.5% of homes in Pembroke were built before 1919, the most of Dublin's 31 areas, and much of the inner suburbs is the same. Many of these houses are on the council's Record of Protected Structures or in an architectural conservation area. Like-for-like repair is normally fine. Changing the material or the look of the front can need permission. Check with Dublin City Council or your own council before ordering.
Cast iron or a look-alike
Where the rules allow, cast iron-effect plastic and painted aluminium ogee are lighter and cost less. On a protected front, cast iron is usually what's accepted.

Questions people ask
Is cast iron worth the money?
On a period house, yes: painted every few years it lasts a century, and it's what the house was built with.
Can I put plastic on a protected house?
Ask the council first. Changing the look of a protected structure can need permission.
Why does it need scaffolding?
Cast iron is heavy, period houses are tall, and lengths are lifted out whole.
