Match the gutters to the windows or the fascia, not the walls. Black is the safe choice on most Dublin houses and hides dirt; anthracite grey suits anthracite windows; white suits white fascias and windows but shows the green; brown is mostly to match older brown windows and can fade.

The four colours

Black	Almost anything: red brick, pebbledash, render, white or dark windows	Shows bird droppings more than you'd think
Anthracite grey	Anthracite or grey windows and doors, modern render	Match the exact shade to the windows
White	White fascia, white windows, white render	Green algae and dirt show; needs a wash every few years
Brown	Older brown or woodgrain windows, brick	Can fade on a south-facing front

A few rules that work

Gutters, downpipes and fascia in the same colour looks tidiest.
On a semi or a terrace, match the neighbour's on a shared run.
A new colour on a protected house can need the council's say.
Aluminium comes in far more colours than plastic, powder coated to a chosen shade.
