How this is worked out
- Metres: a terrace has about 15 m of gutter front and back, a semi about 20 m, a bungalow about 30 m and a detached house 40 m or more.
- Rate: uPVC €25 to €40 a metre fitted, aluminium €55 to €90, cast iron €90 to €160.
- Downpipes: two on a terrace or a semi, three on a bungalow, four on a detached house, at €15 to €25 a metre fitted.
- Not in it: scaffolding, rotten fascia, a new gully at the bottom. The written price lists them if they're needed.
What the written price should list
- The metres of gutter and the number of downpipes.
- The material, the profile and the colour.
- Old gutters taken down and away.
- Access: ladders, a tower or scaffolding.
- Any fascia repairs found, priced before they're done.
- VAT at 13.5% and the guarantee.

Questions people ask
Why do quotes vary so much?
Metres, height and the extras: one company prices scaffolding in, another adds it later. Compare the written prices item by item.
Is it cheaper to replace gutters and fascia together?
Yes, if the boards are near the end too: one set of ladders or one scaffold, one visit.
Can I replace just the front?
Yes. The back and front don't have to match, but the colour and profile at the corners should.
Is VAT on top?
Work on a house is at the reduced rate, 13.5%. Ask for a price that includes it.
